Equipping 21st Century Lifelong learners

Waiuku College along with all other New Zealand Schools has embraced and prepared itself for a revised New Zealand Curriculum that has as it’s focus the goal of producing ‘21st Century Lifelong Learners”. It is an exciting time for all schools as we face the challenge of moving from the traditional blackboard and textbook teaching methods of the past, to a future where there is much greater emphasis on independent learning, self management and the acquisition of skills and attitudes to allow students to go on and be lifelong learners. Learners who can change and adapt as required in a rapidly changing world.

One of the foundation principles of the new curriculum is an emphasis on higher expectations which is very much in tune with our own developing vision in which we see Waiuku College as a place of excellence. Other principles include a greater focus on learning theory, having more coherence and relevance to learning, inclusiveness, respect for our Treaty of Waitangi foundations and a greater respect for diversity and the role of community as a part of valid learning experiences.

We will be challenged as teachers and educators by the New Curriculum, but we are committed to embracing these challenges to do the best possible job we can for the students and community of Waiuku College.
